The test you need depends on your vehicle's age:
For vehicles 2013 and newer (OBD equipped):
We perform the HD I/M test
Results are sent electronically to CARB
For vehicles older than 2013:
We perform a functional inspection and PSIP test (opacity test)
We'll need access to the engine data plate, exhaust system, and throttle
Besides the vehicle test, you must:
Pay an annual fee through the CARB online portal: https://cleantruckcheck.arb.ca.gov/
Yes, we offer HD I/M testing at two locations:
Redding, CA
Sacramento, CA
Both locations have CARB-certified staff and equipment.
You need to participate if your vehicle:
Has a diesel or hybrid engine
Has a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) over 14,000 lbs
Is registered in California (including non-commercial vehicles like RVs)
You can usually find your vehicle's GVWR on the driver's side door jamb label.
The following vehicles don't need to participate:
Zero-emission vehicles
Military tactical vehicles
Emergency vehicles
Historical vehicles
New vehicles with engines certified to the most stringent optional NOx standard (≤ 0.01 g/bhp-hr) - only from 2023-2027
Motorhomes registered outside of California
Vehicles with experimental permits
Starting January 2025:
CA-registered vehicles: Deadline based on vehicle registration date
Out-of-state vehicles: Deadline based on the last digit of the VIN
